Devlog 2.14.25 - Lots of Updates!


Hello All, and Happy Valentines Day!

I just checked, and it looks like my last Devlog post was 77 days ago. Whoops.

It's not for nothing, though - I have quite a bit to share about the progress with DeepSpace RPG! Progress on the Rules Handbook is moving along very smoothly. There's still some ways to go - as I learn Affinity Publisher more and more I'm becoming more and more comfortable with finding the styles, formatting and design that will fit the Rules Handbook best. But progress is certainly being made, and I'm excited to share what I have with you all!

Class Tables & Abilities

The abilities and rules for each of the base 6 classes for the games has been formatted and completed, with the one exception being the final ability for the Lieutenant which I'm still deciding on. I think if there's enough interest, I might make a series of videos or logs detailing  the progression and abilities for each class sort of like those XP to Level 3 videos for D&D.  Also, this was when I was still pretty early into learning the software, so the formatting is not excellent.

Weapons and Equipment

This is where  I started to really hone in on the style and formatting (also, keep in mind that these pages will also be dotted with art, design sketches and lore tidbits. I'll fix  it in post, I swear). Each weapon has a pretty detailed statblock with important keywords like Focus and Auto-Fire, as well as a progression tree with upgrades as you level up. Ignore any weird spacing -  Affinity really doesn't like tables within text boxes. Once again, I'll fix it in post. 

Rules and Systems

This is where I'm at right now, and it's also the slowest part since I'm not just copy-pasting weapon statblocks in some kind of caffeine-fueled frenzy. It's been really rewarding seeing it all together, though, and I think breaking up the monotonous format with tables and sidebars (this page isn't a great example but you can better examples see in the sidebar of the screenshot) is really making it come together. It's a lot cleaner and with some good art I think it'll really pop.

I'm definitely getting somewhere with the project. I'm nearing the end of this last section which is rules for Starships, Vehicles and Artillery. After that it's going to be all about proofreading, formatting and consistency, and finding art (which will honestly be it's own beast). From there, I'm going to start working on the first full Adventure Module and the Bestiary. I haven't decided whether I'm going to wait to release the Rules Handbook until I can release all three books at the same time - that's something I'd love to have all your input on.
